Shaker Table Mounted Apple Peeler

Shaker Table Mounted Apple Peeler.  Pine and Maple.  Mid 19th Century.  Turned wood with peg construction.  Hand turned swivel arm (missing nut and blade). Prong fork to hold apple extending to finely turned hand crank handle (repaired as is frequently the case with these items).  Large carved clamp for table top attachment.  Marked by maker "J.S."  Many of these peelers are marked with the same initials.  Scholars have yet to identify the makers of these beautiful and functional items.  Some have postulated that this implies they were made to be sold by the Shakers to the outside world since very few community pieces are signed in this way.  More research of Shaker shop photos may yield the answer.  14" H, 9" L, 12" W (end of handle to tip of fork).  An excellent example of Shaker ingenuity and craftsmanship.
