Teacher's Desk
Teacher's Desk as pictured in Burks, Jean and Reiman, Timothy. The Encyclopedia of Shaker Furniture. Schiffer, 2003 (p. 137) and attributed to
"Mount Lebanon; possibly by Isaac Newton Youngs (1793-1865); Orange-red paint; h 31 1/4 w 26 3/8 d 18 3/8"" and further "This unusual desk form is sketched and described in a letter from Brother Isaac Newton Youngs to Elder Benjamin S. Youngs (1774-1855) of South Union, Kentucky. The letter, in the Wester Reserve Historical Society (IV:A-36) is illustrated in Shaker Furniture Makers, p.39, by Grant and Allen. Part of the case folds open, creating a sloped writing surface and making the interior with its pigeonholes, storage space and drawers accessible. This case fits on a table-like base with a single drawer and pull out supports." A similar form is also illustrated in Kasay, John. The Book of Shaker Furniture. University of Massachusetts Press, 1980 (p. 152) which provides "...the plain turned legs and total utilization of interior space express the unmistakable Shaker concept of functionalism."
