Mount Lebanon Shaker Community Rocking Chair. Maple. 19thC. Original roughed finish. Elliptical finials with collar at bottom. Four graduated back slats with bold arches. Front posts with vase turnings. Rockers with sweeping curve between posts. Arms with scrolled handholds at front which curve around ending in a block for insertion of the front posts. Original splint seat. While the finials, back slats, front posts and rockers indicate a Mount Lebanon provenance, the scrolled arms are more commonly found on chairs from Enfield or Canterbury, NH communities. A chair with a similar fusion of styles was found at the Mount Lebanon community and currently resides in the Shaker Museum collection in Chatham, NY.
